Policyholders of America

We are a nonprofit association serving policyholders victimized by insurance companies or just plain sick and tired of an industry that has spun out-of-control and know that change can only happen if we, the consumer of a mandated product, ban together.

POA takes an active role in helping policyholders receive full payment for claims made and we do so at no charge.

We are not advocates of litigation and are not associated with trial lawyers, public adjusters or any other group that feeds off of the misfortunes of policyholders. Our only loyalty is to the policyholder.

POA is nonpartisan however we do take a stand on political issues, candidates and policies relating to insurance for one simple reason: You cannot separate insurance from politics.

For far too long, the insurance industry has stacked the deck against consumers by fueling political campaign coffers with contributions that come from insurance executives and their PACs. In return, legislators, elected and appointed judges have bent over backwards for the insurance industry by stripping away punitive damages for bad faith and insurance company-committed fraud. This has done nothing but make bad faith in the claims handling process a profit center.

August 2013, I found out that my cousin living in Canada was diognosed with Cancer, I flew there the next day to support my favorite aunt because he was her only child. While there my mom who lived in NY paid for a local company to test the air quality in the home because there was a very pungent odor and there was water damage in the basement. The report claimed that there was over 10,000 mold spores in the basement alone. My uncle at the time was adamant that there was nothing wrong with his house. My grandmother who was 95 yrs old also said the same thing. But in March 2015 my uncle died of a heart attack after suffering from a stroke years prior and my 30 yr old couisn died of Cancer in his lungs and brain. My aunt is still mourning their loss however, after viewing the episode of Forensic Files, I really believe that God has a purpose for my aunt’s life and that is to advocate for her family. The Canadian housing officals who approved and certified the repairs made to her home after a car turned the corner and crashed into her house did not inspect the foundation or the entire basement structure which was damaged and most likely cracked years prior and as a result the water damages turned into mold which is what caused the deaths of her husband and only son. She still can’t bring herself to call the insurance company to inspect her house because she has lost both loves of her life. All I can do is to try to support her. Our lives are worth more than the cost of repairs and since we pay for homeowners insurance we should not be denied service, our families lives depend on it. I wish all who have endured this nightmare a solution.

I suffered through Cancer two times. Used my job to travel while I still could. Purchased a used 5th wheel RV with a prior repair to the roof. The salesman showed me the repair when I purchased…, it looked fine to me. I’m NOT A CERTIFIED RV REPAIRMAN!

5 years of full time traveling in this RV my health deteriorated until I could no longer work as a RN. Respiratory problems, fatigue, memory problems, frequent illnesses, run down immune system, mood swings and personality changes.

The RV sat covered for 2 years while I tried to get medical help for these many complaints. I started to feel a little better. So paid another RV repairman to get the 5th wheel ready for use. $4000 in repairs and an “OK” the roof is fine and we went camping. It rained that entire week…, water came in every where from the roof. The ceiling and 3 walls were streaked with water damage.

Same trip…,I started to tear one wall out over the large slide because it warped and I could not close the slide without catching the wall material. It was black crumbled with my fingers digging out the aftermath.., underneath. Completely soaked from the wall paper inside to the fiberglass on the outside. It became apparent this area had been wet along time and had also been replaced once before! Our insurance company denied our claim. Stating “we should have recognized inferior repair work”. Lost everything, 3 years later we got scrap value from a dealer in Arizona leaving us $19,000 to refinance into the new RV they sold us.

I now believe this is an industry ploy. They buy RV without salvage titles, dry them out in a dry climate., like Arizona. Repair them with low Mexican labor rates and resell them to unsuspecting RV-ers’ like us!

Some one needs to investigate the entire industry from RV to insurance companies! I have no doubt there have been other elderly retired Rv’ers injured like me, perhaps even killed! I am starting to feel better. Started back to work after almost 6 years. My memory, stamina, and immune system are not the same.

Yes. Melinda Ballard passed away a few years ago. We leave this up because people are still looking for help for problems with insurers. Typically, their comments are not posted and we contact them off board to give them info of other support groups where they may find the help that they need.

    Hi Mary,

I am so sorry to hear that you are dealing with this. My suggestion would be to join Sickbuildings@yahoogroups.com There are people there who have been thru what you are dealing with and can tell you the various places they have gone for help. Also, if you are having serious respiratory problems and other complications, it has become common wisdom that you need to get away from the environment that is making it worse.

    Best of success.

  8. Mary Feliz says:

I lived for seven years in a single family home. That was contaminated with mold feces backed up inside the house. I am having serious upper respiratory problems as well as congested heart failure. Can you please send me more information.

I have moved recently, but I lived in a house for 8 years with mold, not knowing. When I found the mold under the house, I brought it up to the landlord, he he said it was not mold, a year and a half later, we take up the living room floor to fix it and the wood underneath was covered it it. I now have many health problems, can not think straight half the time, how do I get help finding out if the mold caused my problems, I kept a sample of it in a pill bottle, I don’t know what to do

  11. katy says:

    Jessica,

I am so sorry to hear you are having this problem. My suggestion would be that you join two yahoo groups, Sickbuildings and IEQuality. Sickbuildings is comprised primarily of people who have been thru what you are dealing with, who may be able to help you understand what you need to do to protect your family’s health. IEQuality is comprised primarily of professionals in the Indoor Air Quality industry, who may be able to help you understand what needs to be done to mend the building. If you and your family are becoming ill, it would be our suggestion that you find other living arangements until the building problem is solved. This is particularly true if your 2 year old is becoming sick as children are among the segment of the population most affected by exposure to contaminants in water damaged buildings. Good luck to you and your family.

    Michele,

Praying for you and your family!

I know nothing about this as I am just trying to learn about mold, etc.

The first thing I would think of is that you need a good attorney.

    Bless you.

I just watched forensic files and we are presently in the same situation. 2010 hired roofer did not put roof on properly. We had leaks but did not know it. We (4 of us) were very sick. Vomiting, blood, bloody stools, nose bleeds, mental problems and several trips to the ER with asthma attacks. Drs. could not find out anything. Finally, water came through walls. silently leaking for over 1 year. Contractor came out and realized what was going on. We had contacted insurance company previously but would not pay for repairs of mold and would not let contractors open walls to fix damaged walls. We moved out 9 months ago. Had house tested for mold and there are over 14 types growing includings stachybotus. We can’t get anyone to help us! jesus3ismyonlyhope@windstream.net 8/27/14
